Our History
Founded in 1985, the Bardstown Foundation for Excellence in Public Education was the first private foundation in Kentucky established to support a public school system. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $1 million from private sources to enhance educational programs for Bardstown City Schools. With a legacy of innovation and community-driven support, the Foundation continues to enhance education in Bardstown City Schools.

On April 9, 1985, the Foundation was formally incorporated. After a year of planning and organizing, the Bardstown Foundation for Excellence in Public Education was born. The first Board of Directors of the Foundation were introduced at BCS Board Meeting; Joe Bishop, Chuck Brauch, Bill Christensen, Marlee Crowe, Zan Hamilton, Bob Hess, Elmer Hubbard, Lynn Ledford, Jim Nutter, Norm

Milestones & Accomplishments:

Early Childhood Program: Initiated the first statewide early childhood program for 4-year-olds and later expanded to 3-year-olds with financial assistance.

Technology Grants: Provided funding for classroom technology advancements.

Math & Science Programs: Sponsored initiatives to strengthen STEM education.

Enrichment Programs: Supported school break programs to engage students in diverse learning experiences.

STEAM Academy (2016-2020): A major investment by the Foundation, this program offers an immersive one-day-a-week experience for qualifying students in grades 4-7. The STEAM instructor also introduces hands-on STEAM concepts to preschool through second-grade students.

Strings Program (2005): Established in 2005, this initiative introduced stringed instrument instruction during the school day, eventually growing into middle and high school orchestras.
